By the time the full moon rolled around, Sibilla was feeling calmer.

Alice had visited to collect the herbal tea for Catherine’s cousin, and had seemed to be her usual, cheerful self as she passed on Catherine’s regards. However, she hadn’t lingered, as the carriage was waiting on the drive. She certainly didn’t ask questions about love spells, either.

It also seemed that the Goddess was smiling on them that night. The heavy, cloud-laden skies had cleared, and as they set off across the garden, the moon guided their way. It was another late night for the children, but they didn’t care. Beth and Mathew had gone to bed as usual, and found it very exciting to be woken up to cast spells at midnight. The oldest two, however, had helped in the preparations.

“Grace, are you ready?” Sibilla asked her eldest as they walked together.

“Yes. I’ve memorised everything. I’ll be fine.” Her voice was confident—overly so. At fifteen she was already fiercely independent. “I won’t need your help like Rose.”

“No, I’m sure not, but I’ll be right by your side anyway.”

“But you won’t interfere?”

Sibilla rolled her eyes. “No! Honestly, Grace. I only ever want to help. I will only step in if you’re in trouble. As I know you won’t be, then all will be fine.”

They were using fire to bind the south gate to the full moon. They would light a fire and cast a circle around it marked by candles. The spell was simple, but intense. Sibilla aimed to bathe the whole gate in fire, but leave the plant untouched. Almost like a sort of rebirth, or a consecration.

While Grace completed her preparations when they reached the gate, Sibilla lit the candles around the circle with a spell. The flames burned clear and steadily, and Sibilla looked up at the moon.

It seemed to her that the whole garden was waiting with bated breath for the spell, as if it knew what was coming. The orchard was a stone’s throw away, and the shadows beneath its bare branches were dark and thick; she was sure she could hear the bees murmuring.

She turned to Grace and took a deep breath. “Time to begin.”
